Waitaki Community Gardens in Ōamaru is a community run urban garden where people share knowledge and resources on growing food.

Our community resilience oasis was established in 2008, and with the help of our amazing volunteers, the gardens have continued to grow and evolve to meet the needs of the Waitaki community.

Our space continues to grow to include larger vege beds, a food forest, orchard, more storage sheds, greenhouses, and a open-air education and work space with a pizza oven.

Future plans include increasing the size of the gardens and building an enclosed straw bale educational facility. This new building will help to increase teaching capacity and provide a valuable community space to gather year round!

This community project aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals with the goal to improve community resilience, reduce food poverty, and increase social connection.

Community involvement is what it’s all about!
